Breast Cancer: Who Should Be Screened?
My wife was 43 in the fall of 1998 when a mammogram showed suspicious cluster of calcifications in one of her breasts. The doctors assured that it was most likely nothing, but a biopsy revealed that it was a stage 0 cancer. My wife had surgery involving an excision of tissue followed by radiation treatment. The doctors estimated a 95% chance of a complete cure. Again they were wrong: the cancer returned and it proved to be very aggressive. My wife had a mastectomy and reconstruction in the spring of 1999. The cancer had not yet reached any lymph nodes.It is monitored regularly and, to date, there has been no recurrence of his cancer.
It is quite clear that routine mammography, in 1998 my wife saved his life. She had no symptoms, no significant capital and, if she had not had a mammogram, the cancer would most likely spread silently to a point where treatment may not have been a success.
The screening methods, we may have not be perfect, but they are certainly better than nothing.
