Canine Allergies?

I have a boston terrier / pug mix (aka Bugg) and she has really bad skin allergies. The vet instructed us to give him Benedryl and recommended a specific type of omega-3/omega-6 shelves that we could get for it. We also spent her Hill's Science Diet for allergies with a greater amount of omega-3 and omega-6, but his allergies seem worse. Does anyone have suggestions for Canine Skin Allergies?

Many dogs suffer from allergies different for different foods. It is possible that your dog is allergic to something in the food he eats. Although veterinarians have always said that Hill's Science Diet food is excellent, I've never seen the nutritional value in it.

Many dogs are allergic to wheat, which is in the diet of many, and since people do not realize they tend to try many diets of corn before realizing that it is the wheat they react to .

My dog is allergic to things in a few treats, so we now feed only to all natural foods and treats and we found that really helps with scratches. There is also a member of an oil that we got our holistic veterinarian who is natural and gives dogs more oil to help with their skin.

I highly recommend taking a look at the book Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Dr. Cairns Pit. It provides some natural home remedies for things like allergies. One thing you may want to give a test which is recommended in this book feeds ascorbic acid (also known as vitamin C).If you get one for dogs with a natural health store for pets, there will be instructions on how to eat much right on the label.

Also give small bathroom, since water dries on their skin and can often cause more irritation.

Good luck!

I would ask your vet if they do allergy testing. You may have blood tests done, which are pretty reliable. This will tell you what external things she is allergic, like trees, inhale, mold, etc. Blood tests will not test for food allergies. You can also have a skin test is more reliable, but cooler and be done by a specialist in dermatology. Based on the results or they can make vaccines to help desynsitize it. It is a bit more of an expense, but it's worth and will save money in the long term oral medications that do not need as often. Good luck.

Monty Q, my five year old, male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is suffering terribly itchy skin. Following the advice of our vet, we had tests done that show it is very allergic to beef, lamb and mites. We changed his diet, treated the house for dust mites and wash it at least once a week with a medicated shampoo, but it is always itchy. Recently, he stayed with my mother while we were on vacation and his skin got 100 percent better. After being home for a week, it was itchy again. What else can we do?GTC e-mail

A The fact that it has improved while he was with your mother strongly suggests that it is allergic to something in your house. The problem is to identify this substance, which can be a laborious process of gradually eliminating all potential allergens. I have known people to replace the carpets with wood floors, and covered with mattresses and furniture with dust covers to minimize exposure to dust mites. You should also talk to your vet about immunotherapy, in which increasing amounts of allergen are administered by injection: it will accustom the immune system and reduces them to the allergic reaction. In many cases, despite all efforts, the only answer is the continuous use of anti-allergic. Although these drugs have side effects, at least they stop the itching to a tolerable level.
