I have allergies. most pollen types, just my cat. Usually my breathing is never made another as stuffy nose, but last night my throat started closing. It happened once before when I was walking in a field. So is this the same type of thing? It sounds like i wheeze when Im trying to breathe. What's worse is im giving a presentation today! LOL! so any tips to cope? I must breathe deeply to help expand my lungs or something else?
Your lungs will not inflate by itself. When your throat closes and you start wheezing, this is due to laryngeal edema, vasodilatation and bronchoconstriction secondary to the release of histamine. Histamine is released by mast cells when they meet the "specific substance" that you are allergic.
Therefore, when you breathe in this "substance", the mast cells in your lungs are in contact with the "substance" and degranulation (release) of their content. One of these substances is histamine which mediates respiratory problems you encounter.
Take a 2nd generation histamine-2 blocker as Claritin or Allegra. Do not take a 1st generation H2 blocker like Benadryl, because it will make you very sleepy because of its sedative properties (not good if you need to do a presentation today).
