What leading icons in the history of medicine do you have had a major impact on medicine today?

Jennings - discovery of vaccination for the Salk vaccine against polio (it averted a crisis in American medical), Lister methods remediation, and this is just "old" history. One unusual is the National Institutes for Health, which funded much of the progress of the post-World War II advances in medical care in the United States.
