Should I have knee joint replacement at 70 or physical therapy?
Jul 06, 2007 by Ginger | Posted in Pain & Pain Management
My doctor will not process until I'm 70, which is long in the future unless I have excruciating pain.
Certainly PT first. And I would only do the operation after trying PT for 2-3 months if the course was really difficult and painful. I have seen several cases of patients of age and older are in joint replacement surgery and never to leave the hospital b / c pheumonia contracting, or DVT, etc. This does not mean that it will happen for you, but understand that any surgery is serious and should be considered if you have real difficulty with everyday activities necessary. The detox is long and much harder than the PT is Wthout surgery.Granted there are many more cases where patients do quite well after surgery.

Definitely try physical therapy first. If after two months you do not see a change then make the decision to replace the knee joint.

Orthopedic surgeons should take a judicial view of their scope of practice

At issue was the legal interpretation of state law prohibiting the offering of health professionals and services PT advertising unless these professionals were first allowed by the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy (Board) .
The underlying conflict leading to this case arose when a local physical therapist, will present a new orthopedic office and noticed a placard with the words Physical Therapy under the arrow pointing to one side of the desk. Upon further inquiry, the therapist found out that the
physical therapy in the doctors office referred to the
services of an athletic trainer hired by the orthopedic surgeon. No physical
therapist was employed by the physician, nor did the services offered involve
any such therapist.
Chagrined, the physical therapist promptly complained to the Kentucky
Board of Physical Therapy, the agency authorized to license physical therapists
and oversee the practice of physical therapy in the state, pursuant to that
states laws. The complaint alleged that PT services was provided by an athletic trainer without a license orthopedic office. In addition, the complaint alleges that the orthopedic surgeon in question has been billing for PT services using CPT codes 97001 and 97002.
