"Food Allergies in Cats

By Jean Hofve, DVM

Cats often develop "food allergies" or "food intolerances" ingredients found in cat food commercial. The main allergens are: chicken, fish and maize (food ingredients cat very common), meat (often referred to as "meat byproducts" or "meat meal and bone" on the labels of foods for animals company), wheat and dairy products. However, an allergy can develop at any protein to which the cat is repeatedly or constantly exposed.

Symptoms of food allergy are usually of the skin associated with digestion or related.

Symptoms include skin rashes (especially around the face and ears), excessive licking (typically legs, legs or stomach), and red, itchy ears.
The digestive symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea. They are similar to symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease, you can read about here.
Conventional treatments for food allergies are steroids (also called "corticosteroids" and "glucocorticoid" to distinguish them from the anabolic steroids that bodybuilders and athletes sometimes use), desensitization, and diet therapy.

Steroids can be administered by injection of long duration ( "Depo-Medrol" cortisone injection or otherwise) or by mouth as a tablet. Both oral steroids are the most common prednisone and prednisolone. Prednisone is difficult to cats metabolize and must be converted to prednisolone in the liver before it works. Therefore, it is easier and less stressful to give prednisolone itself.

However, steroids have many dangerous side effects. The injectable forms can cause diabetes. Steroids can also damage the kidneys. The primary action of steroids is to suppress the immune system, so that the inflammatory response to allergen does not occur. This makes the cat more prone to infections. Steroids can also cause ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Cats receiving steroids should not be vaccinated because the steroid that prevents the immune system to respond to the vaccine.

Desensitization is not often used in cats, and need to know precisely what the cat is allergic. Once this is established, the substance is diluted and injected to the immune system indicate that the substance is not harmful and does not need to overreact. The skin test is considered the gold standard, there is also a blood test for allergies (sometimes called "Rast" test). While both work well in dogs, they are notoriously inaccurate in cats.

Diet Trials using "novel" ingredients that are not commonly found in foods for pets.New sources of protein include kangaroo, emu, deer, rabbits and ducks. Novel carbohydrate sources include green peas, potatoes, and barley. Lamb and rice used to be new, but since the introduction of lamb and years ago rice foods, many animals (perhaps) become allergic to them too. The prescription plan type (using peas and meat sources novel) are available from some veterinarians. Choosing OTC include Nature's Variety Prairie (lamb, duck, rabbit and venison), Petguard (deer and rabbits), Merrick Thanksgiving Day Dinner (Turkey).A test diet must be at least 8 weeks and includes only the test food, no treats, no exceptions. One coupon diet (like giving a treat made of chicken) could invalidate the entire trial and you must start over.

Holistic Treatments for allergies include food diets ingredients homemade novel anti-inflammatory natural like slippery elm and antioxidants, skin-complete recovery as the omega-3 fatty acids (oils Fish oil, flax) and other treatments for immune system support as BioSuperfood.

It should also be noted that even in cats that are not specifically allergic to something in the food still often do better with a hypoallergenic diet. It seems that the least allergenic immune system to treat, luck, unless they overreact.
