To better protect the public against strains of seasonal influenza and H1N1, local hospitals are demanding that medical personnel who were not vaccinated to wear a mask when providing direct care to patients.

Hobby Harmon, coordinator of safety Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth and chairman of the Working H1N1 hospital said Speare has recommended that all HCWs be vaccinated against seasonal influenza and H1N1.

"Given some of our caregivers can not or will not get vaccinated against influenza, wear a standard surgical mask when providing direct patient care is an equally effective alternative to prevent the spread of influenza. Doing so protects our patients and our suppliers, "said Harmon.

He added that, while about 85 per cent of medical personnel who provide direct care to patients have been vaccinated, there are those who can not be vaccinated for medical reasons.
