what type of monitoring system do doctor's use to monitor patient compliance in the treatment of pain?

When prescribing drugs for patients suffering from pain, there must be a way for doctors to be able to effectively monitor patients to take medicines as prescribed. This would protect the practice a bit more if we could document that we have done our best to treat patients effectively.

As with all compliance issues, it's down to the patient. I had an experience where we put patients on morphine and had to go to the pharmacy to collect once a week so they can not sell them easily.
