Pettibon Technique
Pettibon technique, is not just a different way for a chiropractor to adjust a spine, it is a blend of active posture and structural retraining exercises with coordinated chiropractic maneuvers designed to change the way your body reacts to gravity.
For Pettibon practitioners, humans' functional spinal environment is gravity.
The role that gravity plays in how abnormal spinal form develops is fundamental to Pettibon chiropractic principles. As Dr. Pettibon explains, "The nervous system always wants us to hold our heads upright. And the nervous system will do this at the expense of displacing the lower spine." These are the factors that are the cause of repeat problems, or poor mechanics of the spine that never goes away.
The Pettibon Weighting System consists of specially designed head, shoulder and hip weights that patients wear. The amount of weights and their placement depend upon the spinal displacement that needs to be corrected. The weights cause the body’s righting reflexes to learn to hold the body differently.
With The Pettibon System, patients actively participate in their care—both at the clinic and at home.
When patients come to the clinic, they don’t sit passively waiting to see the doctor. They prepare for their examination by doing warm up exercises and stretching their muscles, ligaments and discs using the Wobble Chair™ and the Repetitive Cervical Traction™.
The Repetitive Cervical Traction and Wobble Chair produce hysteresis(fluid absorption) in the soft tissues by putting them through loading and unloading cycles. The Repetitive Cervical Traction does this for the neck and the Wobble Chair does this for the low back.
Strengthening postural muscles and building endurance is an ongoing process with The Pettibon System. So patients use the clinic’s rehabilitation equipment, as well as their own equipment twice daily at home.
